Studying nonprofit organizations

This week we'll begin to consider some fundamental questions regarding the nature of philanthropy, including what does and does not constitutes philanthropy. In that spirit, and building upon the initial thoughts that you shared with your introduction, I'd ask you to respond to the discussion prompts below.

Please give some thought to these questions and keep in mind that there are not necessarily any correct answers. I'd like to see responses that show deep engagement with the issues. Please be certain to address all three questions in some fashion and avoid overly brief responses. All responses should reference the weekly assigned readings, where possible.

2. Why does philanthropy exist?

Can't other functions serve the same purpose?

Or, can't we just help our families on our own and rely on government?

Is a non-profit sector really necessary?

3. Should non-profits operate like businesses, or should they be held to a different standard?

Should they pay their management less?
