CASE STUDY 34-2
The patient, Maria, ask Nancy McFarland whether she can use some vaginal suppositories she bought last year. How show Nancy respond?
Nancy should first ask Maria to check the expiration date on the box to make sure it is not outdated, then she should advise Maria that if it is the same dosage and days recommended by the provider then it should be ok to use, unless expiration is expired it should be disposed and get the recommended dose needed. Just advise her that using outdated medicine can be harmful and less effective that is why we dispose of them.
Maria tells Nancy that the last time she had a vaginal yeast infection she used only some of the recommended number of suppositories because the infection cleared up. How should Nancy respond?
Nancy should educate Maria on why it is important to finish the recommended medication needed. Let her know that by discontinuing so early could potentially make the yeast infection return and that she would have to start the medication over again. Telling Maria also by her discontinuing so early makes it less effective and that it will not destroy the bad bacteria and could make her symptoms worsen.
Maria does not really like using suppositories. Should Nancy ask Dr. King to prescribe another form of medication for the yeast infection? What other forms may be available?
Nancy should note in Maria's chart for future reference that she doesn't like to use suppositories for future reference. She should also follow up with Dr. King as well to make sure he is aware of this change. There are different forms of antibiotics that treat yeast infections as well that don't come in suppository form. Diflucan is an antifungal antibiotic that is used to treat Candida fungal infections like a yeast infection. This medication can come in pill, injection or liquid form. This is administered in different quantities depending on the severity of the infection.
