Melanie, 38, and Steven, 34, are looking to immigrate to Canada as permanent residents. They are citizens of the country of Morocco, they met 20 months ago and have been living together for the past ten months. In 2000, Melanie obtained her Master's degree from the University of Calgary, in Alberta, Canada and has been working as a civil engineer since 2007. She also has a brother who is currently living in Canada. In early 2003 Melanie was convicted in Morocco in respect of two separate shoplifting incidents (in Canada these would be summary conviction offences). Melanie was sentenced to pay a $500 fine, which she promptly paid.
