Assignment:
Using the post below Conservationist Aldo Leopold was a leading advocate for the preservation of ecosystems. In his "The Land Ethic," Leopold presented his view, "A thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability, and beauty of the biotic community. It is wrong when it tends otherwise." Current challenges to ecosystem stability and the resulting decline of biodiversity include habitat destruction, invasive species, pollution, population, and overexploitation. These challenges have resulted in the decline of biodiversity worldwide.
Preserving global biodiversity is a priority in strategic conservation plans that are designed to engage public policy and concerns affecting local, regional and global scales of communities, ecosystems and cultures.
Based on what you have read; what actions do you believe should be undertaken to help preserve biodiversity?
To help preserve biodiversity, people might consider doing the following
- Recycling
- Educating children about biodiversity, ecosystem, and the threats they face and the opportunities to restore them
- Reducing waste of consumer goods: food, clothes, electrical appliances
Tackling the biodiversity crisis will require cooperation at all levels of society, from intergovernmental agreements down to local community action. Consumers can have an impact through what they buy and use in their day to day lives. Certain products can have a disproportinate effect on biodiversity. Reducing what we waste and throw away can play a part in lowering pollution levels and the over exploitation of natural resources.
