Assignment:

Develop and lead community engagement strategies to enhance participation

Read the case studies and answer the questions that follow:

Case Study A - Work Experience

You are the Community Outreach Officer for a large manufacturing organisation. You receive an email from a local headteacher who you had previously met at a conference.

"Hello,

It was good to see you last week - I very much enjoyed our conversation on the potential of community engagement. Since then, I have been thinking about how we could work together and believe I may have an idea.

Since your organisation is one of the largest employers in the area, many of our students go to work there once they graduate. However, it would be beneficial for both you and them if they had some prior experience in the field. I was wondering if it would be possible to arrange internships or work experience placements for some of the older students. This would give them some of the necessary skills as well as building relationships for when they leave school.

I recommend at least two-week placements for them to get a good feel for your business. We have a slot for this in July. I have identified six students who I feel would particularly benefit as they are interested in this career. However, if you have the capacity to take on more, that would be wonderful. I understand there are potential workplace health and safety issues on bringing them into this environment; however, I'm confident we can work around them. The school can contribute $100 per student to help cover the costs of training and supervising them.

Please let me know what you think of this idea. I can arrange a meeting with the children and their parents to discuss the feasibility this with you in more detail. Some of their teachers would likely also want to provide input."

Case Study B - Town meeting

A town meeting is being organised to discuss proposed changes to public transport; you have been given responsibility for organising it. Your manager sends you the following email explaining the specifications for the meeting:

"Hi,

As you know, this meeting will be very important. If the changes go ahead, they will have profound effects on the town, particularly its poorer residents. Therefore, we would like to get as many people as possible to the meeting. The target is 100 people, which is too many for the town hall's meeting space.

We need to let as many people as possible know about the meeting. Make sure that they are aware, whether they are walking through town, reading the newspaper or follow its groups on social media.

Some people have also expressed problems getting there. Can you look into the costs of putting on an extra bus to make sure those without their own transport can attend?

Since it will be held at night, we will need staff to stay late. Ten people should enough to set the meeting up and help manage it. Unfortunately, this will be billed as overtime. Finally, please check whether we have a PA system. If not, we will need to hire one.

If you think of anything else we need, please let me know."

Case Study C - Vaccination program

You are responsible for a health care program offering vaccinations to the local community. The program is based in a health clinic. There is a high turnout of families with young children. However, you have had a low response rate from elderly people, a group that would benefit from them most.

You have identified the following possible reasons for this low engagement:

· They don't know the program is occurring

· They don't have the transport to the health clinic

· They are too ill or immobile to reach the health clinic

· They lack confidence in their communication abilities.

Question 1: List the following details for the proposed community engagement:

· Purpose

· Time

· Target group

· Objectives

· Specific issues

· Budget.

Question 2: Identify three stakeholders and individuals who should be involved in the engagement process.

Question 3: Determine the level of involvement for each of the following groups, and give reasons for your answers:

· Pupils

· Teachers

· Parents.

Question 4: What barriers may occur to the stakeholders' participation?

Question 5: This Case Study uses a meeting as an engagement method. Suggest another possible one that could be used and give a reason.

Question 6: What costs should be included in a budget for this engagement event?

Question 7: Research one venue in your local area that would be suitable for the participation activity. Provide costs for it.

Question 8: Create a schedule for the event. Items on it should include:

· Setting up

· Explaining proposed changes

· Soliciting opinions from audience

· End of meeting.

Question 9: List three ways to prioritise engagement with elderly people for the program.

Question 10: List three possible resources they may require.
