What is the significance of Tennessee v. Garner? Self-defense can only be used when the defendant confronts deadly force. It was not reasonable to believe that Garner needed a large knife for defense in a fistfight. In cases of self-defense, the defendant should be convicted for manslaughter rather than murder. In this fleeing felon case, Garner's Fourth Amendment rights were violated.
