He embodies a unique form of corrupt innocence and hope that was never seen before and that embodies American subjectivity. Obviously, Humbert Humbert is such a character. No character like him ever existed before he was created. In his wildly articulate corruption, he is unmatched. These kinds of characters are very rare in literature. They embody unique and singular features. They contain depths and complexities. And they embody a certain historical moment or national character. And they are just bigger and more important than the vast majority of literary characters. Make a case that Sethe, in Beloved, should be considered one of these rare literary characters.
