You are working a 12 hours shift on a labor and delivery unit.
Today, Mrs. Kalim is one of your assigned clients. She is fully dilated and effaced, but contractions are still 2 minutes apart after 10 hours of labor. Mrs. Kalim, her obstetrician Dr. Mary, and you have agreed on her plan to have a fully natural delivery without medications. However, her obstetrician partner is handling day shift today, and Dr. Mary goes home. This new obstetrician orders you to administer several medications to Mrs. Kalim to strengthen contractions and speed up delivery, because he has another patient across town to deliver.
Your unit adheres to an empowering model of practice that believes in client advocacy.
