Question

The role of the healthcare professional I worked with included her expertise in healthcare. She helped identify some risks for patients due to obesity, and what she felt our community could do to help lower the rate of obesity. One of the changes we identified was the need for safer sidewalks, walking trails, and bike paths to encourage people to exercise more. Although our town has some sidewalks, you can not get far before crossing busy roads or walking in the grass next to traffic. A key stakeholder would include every citizen in town who could support this change by contacting the city council and discussing the need for safer sidewalks and bike paths. Stakeholders could also include walking and biking groups located in town. Ways to advocate include speaking with elected officials about the need for safer walking/biking trails and preparing research that states how many injuries happen each year due to the lack of safe sidewalks/bike paths (U.S. Department of Transportation, 2015). An additional helpful resource is applying to be a "Walk Friendly Community" (Highway Safety Research Center, n.d.).
