While roughly 50 million people worldwide live with epilepsy, the cause of the disease is still unknown in about 50% of cases globally and there is no known cure although up to 70% of those living with epilepsy can become seizure free with the appropriate medications (Singh, et al., 2016). A medical research company may benefit from a social health app that allows people with the disease to track their personal health history, record the frequency, length of their seizures and what kinds of medications they are taking. This information could be beneficial for a patient to share with their doctor to determine what medications are having the best impact to the patient living a seizure free life as there is no "one size fits all" solution. Depending on the patient's comfort level and consent in sharing their medical history and information, the research company could use the data to share with epilepsy research organizations to see if they are able to find any linkages that may help determine a cause.

Building IT security strategies, such as privacy, into the architectural principles of a mHealth app is of the utmost importance for a medical research company that relies on the input of personal consumer data to assure users that their information is secure and will only be used or disclosed as approved by the user (Office for Civil Rights, 2020). Treating user information like a data asset and prioritizing principles such as Data and System Security will enhance their value.
