In this discussion, each student will review his/her experiences interviewing and shadowing professionals in a criminal justice (or related field) position. Through this discussion, students will demonstrate employability skills including critical thinking and analysis, as well as organization and communication.
1. Compose an initial discussion post that clearly and thoroughly addresses the following questions:
- Provide a brief summary of your interview, including the title (JSO sergeant) and field (police officer) of the person you interviewed, as well as key highlights from your interview.
- Provide a brief summary of your shadowing experience, including activities you were able to engage in and any standout experiences you had. (ride-along experience with a police officer).
- Based on your interview and shadowing experiences, identify and briefly discuss 3 key pieces of advice you would give yourself and others about pursuing the police officer position you identified. Clearly link a piece of advice back to your interview and/or shadowing experiences.
- How will the information obtained in your interview and shadowing experiences shape your police officer career strategy? Remember that a career strategy encompasses actions before entering your police officer career, as well as actions you take once you are employed in your police officer career path (in criminal justice or a related field)
- Now that you have spoken with a professional in the field of criminal justice (or police officer) you are interested in, what are your thoughts on pursuing a police officer career path for yourself? Discuss.
2. In your responses to your classmates, consider the various professions represented by the professionals interviewed. Consider the following as you formulate responses to your classmates' posts about their interviews:
- How might the information provided by your fellow classmates' interviews benefit you in your police officer career pursuits?
- What can you learn from the advice of the professionals interviewed by your classmates?
- Did your classmates' interviews provide insight that will in any way impact your own police officer career pursuits?
- Can the information gained during your interview experience provide insight for any of your fellow classmates? How?
