A board should be built up of people who are proficient in directing and protecting the company. A board that governs effectively will increase the likelihood that the organization will achieve what is intended to be achieved while avoiding unethical actions. I think the top two traits would help in developing a successful board. The first one is Servant-leadership motivation, this means that they lead because they must serve. If an organization has board members who have a "must be in charge" mindset it can cause a disruption to not only the board but the entire organization. A board member with a servent-leadership motivation will have an open mind, ask questions from all level of the organization to learn and gain perspective which will positively impact the organization as a whole. Secondly, I think it's important to have some sort of diversity in their educational or career background. A board made up of diverse members will provide them strategic foresight to explore changing context, internally or externally, which will in turn help the ogranization achieve their intended results in the long run. I think there are many other traits to consider but i'd say those are the top two to really take into consideration.
