Vision and balance use two different types of receptors, photoreceptors and mechanoreceptors, respectively. Photoreceptors respond to wavelengths of light, in the 400-800 nm range, while mechanoreceptors respond to changes or deformations in the plasma membrane, such as bending of hair cells.
