Layla is a 34-year-old female who has been dealing with depression and anxiety for over 10 years now. When she was younger Layla had an eating disorder. She had bulimia nervosa from the time that she was 12-19 years old. Layla grew up in a two parent family with one younger sibling. Layla's parents fought all the time. Layla remembers an incident from when she was 8 years old; her mother was screaming hysterically and tried to run out of the house naked. Layla remembers that her father stopped her mother, but does not remember the rest of the details. Layla's mother also had a strong preference for Layla's younger brother. Most of the time her mother would ignore her or put her down. At times Layla's father was protective of her, but most of the time he was scared of her mother and therefore when her mother put her down he did not speak up to defend Layla. With respect to this, there is one particular incident that really sticks out for Layla. When Layla was 18 years old her mother wrote on a piece of paper that Layla would amount to nothing and signed and dated it. Her father did not speak up when her mother was doing this. Layla does not have a close relationship with her parents and has not spoken to them in five years. Layla's parents do not attempt to make any contact with her and she does not attempt to make any contact with them. Layla has significant trouble in romantic relationships.
She feels that she is a fraud and that whoever she is with will find out that she is not a good person and leave her. Therefore, before this happens Layla will sabotage the relationship and end it. Layla usually ends up having sex with someone else which makes her feel like an awful person and she ends up ending the relationship. This has been a pattern in Layla's relationship's from the time that she was 18 years old. Layla believes herself to be worthless and does not believe that she has anything significant to contribute. Her depression and anxiety prevent her from making a connection with anyone in a meaningful way.
