In "The Chrysanthemums" two sets of visitors come to the Allen ranch.
The first set is described as "two men in business suits. The three of them stood by the tractor shed, each man with one foot on the side of the little Fordson. They smoked cigarettes and studied the machine as they talked" (237). This description of these men is most straight forward: they are businessmen who buy cattle from Mr. Allen.
Then there is another set, a set of one, actually: "a big stubble-bearded man" (239). This man is much more complex. His character is not so straightforwardly presented. Starting with paragraph 28 and forward, this man is revealed to the reader through symbols. Using three different symbols, interpret the character of this man. Do not use some of the text someone else has quoted and analyzed. Select something else. There are oodles of passages. In the end, select three symbols and interpret them to reveal this man's character. Have fun! Use quotes and page numbers in the format I used in writing this blog. Word count: 200.
