Rationale: The aim of this assignment is to enable you to become more independent readers and autonomous learners by self-directing your reading efforts based on your perceived needs as well as particular major/academic discipline.
This week, you will each focus on individually improving your reading skills in courses related to your current major (or intended major if still undeclared).
Guidelines: You will need to select 2 texts representative from your major that focus on/in some way relate to the topic of identity.
1st Text: You will select and complete a graphic organizer (you can search Google for "reading graphic organizers" or "graphic organizers for Psychology/Philosophy/History/Biology texts") for your first selected text.
2nd Text: For your second selected text, you will create a concept map for your text.
Tips for Researching Articles:

- Promotes Active Learning - studies show that readers will comprehend topics better and remember them if they can actively react to the material. Graphic organizers encourage active learning by allowing readers to assess their learning levels
- Encourages Academic Success - Since readers are actively engaged, they will be more connected to the subject matter
- Enhances Learning - Many graphic organizers tend to draw on a reader's prior knowledge of the subject matter. High prior understanding has been associated with better comprehension and enhanced learner interest
Directions:
Step 1. Read carefully your first selected text representative of a text in your major, annotating it and applying some of the reading strategies we have reviewed throughout our quarter.
Step 2. Select and complete a graphic organizer for your first selected text (you can search Google for "reading graphic organizers" or "graphic organizers in biology/Sociology/Psychology/History"/your specific discipline)
Step 3. Share your completed graphic organizer, a 2 paragraph summary and response of the main ideas from your text, and a copy of your text.
