During most of his life, the patient had been inclined to keep to himself. He had a few friends, his feelings were hurt readily, and he seldom participated in any social activities. As a boy, he had done nearly average work in school but had never taken part in extracurricular activities. After dropping out of school he secured a job. He seldom talked with the other workmen and preferred to eat his lunch alone. When he was 25 years old, he became even more withdrawn and began to behave strangely. At times he would refuse to eat, especially some articles of food, for fear of being poisoned. He quit his job and stayed at home, often not leaving the house for several days at a time. At times he even locked himself in his room. He was taken to a mental hospital where he remained withdrawn. At times, his facial expression became rather unchanging. Sometimes he would not answer questions directed to him. He would sit alone for considerable periods of time without making any noticeable movements.
