1. Assume that a security model is needed for protection of information in your class. Using the NSTISSC model, examine each of the cells and write a brief statement on how you would address the three components represented in that cell.
2. Security characteristics such as confidentiality, availability, integrity, accuracy, authenticity, utility, and possession are all important. In your opinion, which one characteristic is most important, and why?
3. Define a system and describe the basic elements of a system
4. What is system engineering and why is it important?
5. What are the major system engineering functions in conceptual design? Preliminary design? Detail design and development? System operational use and life-cycle support?
6. Describe the basic difference between the waterfall model, the spiral model, and the vee model.
7. Select a system of your choice and describe the system life cycle. Construct a detailed flow diagram describing your system.
8. Discuss some of the key challenges when implementing system engineering.
Research Assignments:
1.The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is responsible for developing standards and guidelines, including minimum requirements, and for providing adequate information security for all federal agencies' operations and assets. In its special publication 800-100 "Information Security Handbook: A Guide for Managers," NIST discusses the information security development life cycle.
Research the "Information Security Development Life Cycle" according to NIST. Review "Special Publication 800-100" and write a two-page APA style summary of the following:
- NIST information security development life cycle
- Compare NIST information security development life cycle to the cycle proposed in the course textbook
- Your assessment of both approaches
Cite at least one additional reference.
2. Research the following key terms:
- System Development Methodologies
- Application Development
- Software Engineering
Find a journal publication pertaining to the subject, and write a 2 page APA format report, summarizing the paper. Make sure to include references. The last section of your paper should be titled "Author Reflection." This last section should be your reflection on why you selected that particular publication and your critique of the publication examined.
