Secret Trade Law study case: Petr Taborsky a former student research assistant at USF, served 7 months in prison, including 2 months on a chain gang, for stealing trade secrets. Taborsky was an undergrad student in chem and bio, working as a lab assistant at the college of engineerting when he took part in a research project to make sewage treatment cheaper and more efficient. The research was sponsored by Florida Progress, a utility holding company which claimed that it had all rights to the research. Taborsky discovered a way to turn a clay-like compound similar to cat litter into a reusable cleanser of sewae, a process that has valuable applications. The project leader maintains that Taborsky was part of a research team that made the discovery but the student claims he made it on his own after the project has ended.
