1. While cooking with boiling water, there are two ways to get a mild burn. I will feel a mild burn if I splash boiling water onto my skin. I will also feel a burn if I accidentally place my hand in a stream of steam coming from a kettle or covered pot. Even if the steam is at 100C, and the mass of H2O is the same, the steam burn will be more damaging (and be more painful!). Use concepts and vocabulary from the chapter to explain why.
2. How does the kinetic theory describe a gas? What does temperature measure according to the theory?
3. What creates pressure according to the kinetic theory? Why does pressure increase with temperature in a closed container?
4. A heat pump is a device that uses work to transfer heat from a low-temperature reservoir to a high temperature reservoir. How does this relate to the Second Law of Thermodynamics?
A sphere of radius R is uniformly charged to a total charge of Q. It is made to spin about an axis that passes through its center with an angular speed ω. Find the magnitude of the resulting magnetic field at the center of the sphere.
A resistor is in the shape of a cube, with each side of resistance R . Find the equivalent resistance between any two of its adjacent corners.
