The Second Chance Act is a piece of legislation signed into law by President George W. Bush during his tenure. The law authorized federal funding for state and federal reentry programs. It also directed - but did not require - the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) to consider giving federal prisoners longer stays in halfway houses. It authorized funds for a minimal test program for elderly prisoners. The "second chance" the act referred to applied almost exclusively to people leaving prison - it did not give shorter sentences to people already in prison.

For this discussion, I have asked you to watch a short film clip called Second Chances and posted a PDF file to look at some frequently asked questions regarding the Second Chance Act. After completing the video and PDF, answer the following questions and justify your answer with evidence from this week's materials.

1. What are some of the barriers to successful reintegration that inmates face and that the Second Chance Act attempts to help?

2. How likely are you in the future if you owned a business or were placed in a position to hire a former inmate, would you? What factors would play into your decision?
