Question

The patient is a 69-year-old woman who has a sebaceous cyst, which has started to grow larger, on the left side of her face. She presents now for excision of the cyst. The patient was brought to the OR and placed on the operating table in supine position. She was given 50 mg of Demerol and 1mg of Versed IV. The left face was prepped and draped in the usual sterile fashion. The area overlying the cyst was anesthetized with 1% lidocaine with epinephrine. An elliptical incision was made of the cyst in the direction of the facial wrinkles. The cyst itself was 1cm in diameter. The underlying cyst was dissected away from the surrounding tissues, taking care to remove the entire cyst with an excised area of 2.0 cm x 0.5 cm. Hemostasis was obtained using electrocautery. The wound was then closed with 3-0 Vicryl. It was then dressed with Masticel and Steri-Strips. The patient tolerated the procedure well and was taken to the recovery room in stable condition.
