SCM 540 Operations and Supply Chain Management Assignment - Abu Dhabi University, UAE
Project - "Improving Operations and Supply Chain in Production/Service Systems"
Project Objective - The objective of this project is to identify a business problem related with operations and supply chain management and to suggest and explain a beneficial idea to solve that problem.
Problem Title - Limited Cold Storage space during the Date Receiving Seasons at Al Foah Date Company.
Problem Description - Al Foah L.L.C is a governmental company which is one of the biggest businesses in date palm industry, especially in the field of dates processing. During the peak seasons which is called "Dates Receiving Season", the company is receiving the dates from the local farmers and from other GCC suppliers. There are number of Cold Stores in the Al Saad Facility (near Al Ain, UAE Road) of the company, where the raw dates received at the company's Receiving Centers is admitted to be stored into the Al Saad Facility in those Cold Stores. During peak seasons -which they are in the summer (August, September and October) and where the weather is very hot and requires keeping the raw dates at low temperatures- the space in those Cold Stores can be a challenge. Either there is not enough space to store some of the received raw dates or some huge received quantities will take time waiting in the corridors area to have some space in the Cold Stores for storage. The corridors are not suitable storage area, facing the risk of damage, and loss with high holding and storing costs.
Problem Title - Minimize product waste at Al Foah Dates Company
Problem Description - Based on monthly inventory reports, many quantities of finished products are wasted expired products. There are several reasons for products expiration in the company, including the following:
1. Inappropriate storage in the warehouses causes dates expiration, occurring because of inappropriate environment that caused dates infestation.
2. Using of old packaging materials, such using old rolls or old boxes.
3. Lack of clear selling plan on the port of Al Foah factory increases the stocks in Al Foah showrooms due to the long selling period, where showrooms return expired products before they are sold.
Moreover, product waste affects the company in many areas.
Time waste is one of the main areas that is affected, due to time spent on disposing of expired products, as it is takes long time to get approvals from several departments, such as Quality Department and Administrative Affairs Department. This time wasting could reduce the company productions as the employees spend much time in executing procedures instead of spending their time in producing other products or selling the products to customers in different countries.
Another area that is affected by product expiration is money waste, through spending considerable amount of money in purchasing packaging material, which is affects the company revenues due to the high packaging cost.
In this report, I will be focusing only on the third reason, which is lack of clear selling plan by the factory specifically, I will suggest selling the older products first.
Problem Title - Establish disposal process at a Government Organization in the UAE.
Problem Description - Disposal of materials is considered very critical in any organization and should be done on regular basis as the equipment/vehicle/materials will become obsolete or unusable due to their lifetime and usage for long period.
The government organization that I am analyzing is currently giving all its scrap to the Center of Waste Management - Abu Dhabi free of charge. The organization is not benefiting from these items by recycling or selling them and they have no proper process to store, transfer and dispose those items.
Therefore this organization should have regulations and procedures for all the scrap items, because they are very concerned about sustainability and having a green environment in their premises. Therefore, they should consider recycling, which will result in cost savings, as well as environmental benefits.
They may also implement disposal methods that will not harm the environment. Moreover, they should have an effective, efficient and transparent process for reusing the obsolete/unused items, or for selling those items to recycling and other companies, which will lead to a new revenue stream.
