Assessment - Comparing Groups Problems
Answer the questions below using the data files provided. The data file (HW1_Q1) for the first homework problem contains an extract from the HILDA survey.
Write your report item by item, giving a separate answer for each item. Be concise, no more than three sentences for any one question.
Problem 1: Questions
Question 1) Determine the MEAN, MEDIAN, STANDARD DEVIATION, MIN, MAX and INTERQUARTILE RANGE (IQR) of INCOME_WEEKLY. Report these as part (A) of your response.
Question 2) Obtain the STANDARIZED VALUES (Z-SCORE) for INCOME_WEEKLY. What is the MIN and MAX of ZINCOME_WEEKLY? Report these as part (B) of your response.
Question 3) Explain what the standardization of a variable does to the values of a variable and what the MAX of ZINCOME_WEEKLY indicate about the distribution of INCOME_WEEKLY. Report these as part (C) of your response.
Question 4) Determine the CONDITIONAL MEAN and CONDITIONAL STANDARD DEVIATION for INCOME_WEEKLY by SEX. Report these as part (D) of your response.
Question 5) You should find in part (D) of your report that the CONDITIONAL MEAN and CONDITIONAL STANDARD DEVIATION differ between the two groups. What do the two sets of conditional statistics indicate about differences between the weekly income of men and women?
Question 6) Conduct a ONE-SAMPLE T-TEST with the variable INCOME_WEEKLY. Test if the average weekly differs significantly from the population weekly average income of $680. Report and interpret the result.
Question 7) Conduct an INDEPENDENT SAMPLES T-TEST with INCOME_WEEKLY as the test variable and SEX as the group variable. Is there a difference between the group MEANS and is it STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT? Explain what statistical significance indicates in your response.
Question 8) Conduct a CHI-SQUARE TEST of SEX and EMPLOYMENT with CRAMER'S V COEFFICIENT. Report the measure of association and the p-value as part (H) of your response and explain why CHI-SQUARE TEST with Cramer's V coefficient is appropriate.
Question 9) Use the statistics reported in part (H) to determine to what extent EMPLOYMENT is dependent or independent of SEX. Report your interpretation of H.
