Assessment Task - Mathematical and scientific thinking and learning in early childhood.
In this assessment task you are required to design an outdoor treasure hunt for children aged three to five years. The treasure hunt experience will then initiate a series of learning experiences related to identification of math and science concepts and processes with clear links to the EYLF.
Part A - Designing the treasure hunt.
In this section you are required to
• Create and design a treasure hunt suitable for children aged between three to five years that has a focus on mathematical and scientific concepts and processes. This can be a combination of visual and written.
• Provide details about the aim of the treasure hunt, elements or features of the design and how children will engage with the treasure hunt experience. This should be supported with links to academic literature and research as well as the EYLF.
• State the math/ science concepts and processes that can be explored through engagement with the treasure hunt.
Part B - Play-based learning experiences as a follow up to the treasure hunt
In this section you are required to:
• Develop a series of three follow experiences that can be provisioned and implemented in the indoor or outdoor learning environment
• Describe how the math/ science concepts and processes experienced in the treasure hunt are extended and/ or consolidated in the follow up experiences
• Explain and justify the value of the value and relevance of the follow up experiences with particular attention to age range of the children and the previous experience with the treasure hunt
• Use academic literature, research, the EYLF and reference to theory to reinforce your justification.
