"Nursing Informatics is the "science and practice (that) integrates nursing, its information and knowledge, with information and communication technologies to promote the health of people, families, and communities worldwide" (IMIA Special Interest Group on Nursing Informatics 2009 as cited in Nursing Informatics | AMIA, n.d.). As an NP, we would need to consult the nurse informaticist when we need help with the charting system, how to look up patient data and any issues we may have when it comes to the technology we use to document on our patients. The Nurse Informaticist are important team members in the primary care setting. "Nurse informaticians work as developers of communication and information technologies, educators, researchers, chief nursing officers, chief information officers, software engineers, implementation consultants, policy developers, and business owners, to advance healthcare" (Nursing Informatics | AMIA, n.d). Working in a hospital, how we do something in our electronic medical records, changes over time and is usually an improvement. Nurse informaticist come in and do training with us before we "go live" with something new so we understand not only how we changed, but why. It is helpful that NI are nurses because they are knowledgeable about patient care and how it flows on the floor and can understand what works best versus an information technologist who doesn't know how a flowsheet should be formulated in regards to how we do our assessments. An RN can apply to eligible schools for either the Master's of Science in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree in Nursing Informatics. These programs are usually 2 years long.
