School-based occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) support students' health literacy by addressing multiple factors that influence student's ability to effectively understand and use health information. OTPs provide education on concepts of health and wellness in the school environment. OTPs collaborate with teachers and other school staff to incorporate teaching health-related concepts in a way that is developmentally appropriate and accessible to their clients, which may involve teaching topics such as nutrition, exercise, hygiene, safety, and coping strategies for emotional wellness through hands-on activities, visual aids, and interactive lessons. OTPs help students develop underlying skills necessary to promote engagement in health literacy activities and health management, including sensory integration, self-regulation, motor skills, and higher-level cognitive skills. OTPs help students develop habits, routines, and roles that support use of health literacy for health management. This helps students become more self-sufficient in managing their own health and wellness.
