Scholarly Aesthetic Appreciation Project -
Guidelines: The purpose of this project is to facilitate an integrated understanding of caring as foundational to advanced nursing practice. This project is intended to be an expression of aesthetic understanding of caring in nursing, integrating lived experience with an artful communication of a synthesized meaning of caring in your nursing situation (as nurse leaders and managers).
Overview of the Project:
You will create an aesthetic project that clearly reflects the central caring essence in relation to your nursing leadership and management and attributes of your scholarly paper. The project must be completed with your two hands especially for this project, and presented to the class in before the schedule for final examinations.
Process:
Step 1: Reflect on your nursing situation (as nurse leaders and managers) and on the caring essence, and create an aesthetic re-presentation of the caring lived between you and the one nursed. Aesthetic representations may take any form except those noted below; examples that are great to choose from include creations such as pottery, song, poetry, dance, needle-work, painting, sculpture, etc.
Step 2: Create a 150-word abstract (an approximately one-page synopsis - formatted in APA) that describes your aesthetic project - what it actually is and why you chose this particular medium of expression, what is the meaning in it for you, what do all the details of your creation represent? It must be sufficient to convey your growing in understanding and caring during the process of creation. As usual, create a title page with the following page being your abstract. There is no references page required - you are the reference:-)
Step 3: Create your project! Think about your special talents and abilities and use them to create a unique expression of your caring in nursing.
Please note: Collages from magazine articles and posters are NOT permitted, nor are electronic paintings, graphics, or PowerPoint presentations. The idea is for you to express yourself through direct tactile ways. The aesthetic representation must be your original work, not work done by others, and must be created for this course. It must not be a revision of a project created for another course. You will present your project in person in your group, and we will try to set up a Skype call (fingers crossed it will be successful). If that doesn't work, you will make short 3-minute video of your project and upload into Blackboard. This is an opportunity to allow yourself to be creative, to express your sense of caring in nursing in perhaps unfamiliar ways...remember that courage, trust and humility are ingredients of caring! Your project must be capable of being kept permanently.
Step 4: Staging and Presentation of your Project:
If you create a poem, picture, or other written work, you must artistically imprint it on paper or other medium and frame it or present it in artistic ways, paying particular attention to the reason for your choice of paper and special frame. Merely imprinting your poem over a watermark or photo background and then uploading does not answer to the entirety of the process (and will not earn you full points). Instead, consider how the frame further expresses your caring. Make sure that your project is titled. The idea of this project is for it to be a permanent creation: Your project can be cherished and handed down to your family as a keepsake of your expert nursing caring. Just think, your great, great, great grandchildren might one day hold your project in their hands!
