Proposal for Term Paper

Writing about 500 words, describe and outline your plan for your term paper. In this proposal, indicate the option you select (see list of options below under “Term Paper”), the interpersonal theory(ies), concepts and/or competencies you will explore, the research you will conduct, as well as your general plan for this paper. Be sure to include a minimum of three scholarly sources you plan to use as well and how these sources relate to your thesis or research question.

Paper Option #1

- Self and Others: Select two readings from the chapters and articles we’ve explored and examine how the insights you gain from these readings can be applied to understanding yourself as an interpersonal communicator. Part One: Explain the communication concepts developed in the readings and discussions; Part Two: Describe and assess how the insights from these readings apply to you as an interpersonal communicator; and Part Three: Analyze your close personal and voluntary relationship with another and consider how the key insights can be applied to the way that you relate interpersonally. Use concrete examples from one or more of your personal relationships to describe how you relate and evaluate the effectiveness of your relationship. Make sure you are focusing on the relationship and its dynamics instead of on individual communication behaviours.

- Interview with an Interpersonal Professional/Scholar: Interview a professional or scholar on the topic of interpersonal communication. Be sure to explore her/his work or research prior to the interview and to create a series of questions, which you will also submit along with your term paper. Part One: Introduce the purpose of the paper, the expert, and the communication theory(ies), concepts and/or competencies that the professional/scholar will discuss. Outline the questions that you will/have asked the expert prior to your meeting with him/her; Part Two: Demonstrate that you have fully researched the theory, the person or organization in question and show how his/her contribution affects close and personal relationships; and Part Three: Discuss whether or not and perhaps how this interview has changed or challenged your perception of interpersonal communication. If it has not changed or been challenged, perhaps discuss why this is.
