In the schematic diagram below for a galvanic cell, the half-cell on the left consists of a Zn(s) electrode in a 1.0 mol L-1 Zn(NO3)2(aq) solution. The half-cell on the right consists of a Cd(s) electrode in a 1.0 mol L-1 Cd(NO3)2(aq) solution. The electrodes are connected to a voltmeter by wires. The two solutions are connected by a salt bridge filled with a very concentrated solution of KNO3.

Half reaction E ° / VZn2+(aq) + 2 e- ?

 Zn(s) -0.763Cd2+(aq) + 2 e- ?

 Cd(s) -0.403

Answer the following questions regarding this electrochemical cell.

  • anode
  • cathode

(b) The concentration of Zn2+(aq)

  • increases
  • decreases

(c) The mass of the Zn(s) electrode

  • decreases
  • increases

(d) Negative ions (NO3-) within the salt bridge diffuse towards the

  • Cd(NO3)2(aq)
