A 54-year-old patient is scheduled for a breast biopsy with possible lumpectomy. They are admitted to the preoperative holding area with vital signs of: BP 142/94 mmHg, temperature 98.4°F (36.8°C), HR 100 bpm, RR 24/minute. The oxygen saturation by pulse oximeter is 98% on room air. The patient has a history of hypertension, obesity, and sleep apnea. During the preoperative evaluation, the anesthesiologist has assigned the patient a physical status of ASA-2 on the classification system from the American Society of Anesthesiologists, which estimates surgical risk. The patient says they want to be "knocked out" during surgery and have great fear that they will awaken during surgery. The patient is speaking rapidly, and appears tense during the preoperative assessment.
