John Kavaw knows that his next semester is going to be a busy one. Having just finished SCOM361, he decides to put some of the knowledge gained to use. After accounting for sleeping, eating, class time and commuting time, he figures he has about 8 hours a day or 56 hours in a week to dispose of. He can exceed that limit but he’d rather not as it will mean sleeping less than he likes to.
To do well in his course, he figures he needs to spend about 20 hours per week studying. He could study less but his marks would be affected.
John has a part-time job that takes up to 10 hours per week. Together with his savings the job covers his essential expenses. He cannot work less than 10 hrs. but he can take on extra hours, if he likes. He is paid 15 dollars per hour for extra shifts. This extra money would increase his funds for non-essentials. He currently has a budget of 80 dollars per week for non-essentials.
John wants to spend at least 15 hours with his girlfriend and 10 hours relaxing with friends each week. He budgets 8 dollars for each hour spent with his girlfriend and 5 dollars for each hour spent relaxing with friends. He can borrow money from his parents if necessary but he would rather not.
Help John allocate his time between study, girlfriend, friends and work so that:
1) He doesn’t cut into his sleep too much.
2) He doesn’t shortchange either his girlfriend or friends too much.
3) His spending on his girlfriend and friends does not exceed his budget too much. The budget includes the additional funds he gets from taking on extra hours at his job by too much.
4) He doesn’t let his grades suffer too much.
