A university demonstrated the use of satellite image maps for estimating urban population. A portion of a city was partitioned into n=128 census block groups, and satellite imagery was obtained. For each census block, the following variables were measured: proportion of block with low-density residential areas (x1), and proportion of block with high-density residential areas (x2). The first-order model to predict population density (y), shown below, was fitted to the data.

y=-0.0296 + 2.003x1 + 5.003x2 and R2 = 0.686

  • The global F statistic is used to test the null hypothesis, . Describe this hypothesis in words.
  • The model is statistically useful for predicting population density.
  • The first two census block groups are poor predictors of population density.
  • The model is not statistically useful for predicting population density.
  • The first two census block groups are reliable predictors of population density.
