After the 1906 earthquake, San Francisco enacted stringent building codes with City planners set about rebuilding with strong seismic safety measures with flexible building materials that could better withstand the lateral forces generated by earthquakes. This included the use of steel frames, reinforced concrete, and composite materials that provided greater ductility and resilience under seismic loading. What amazes me the most after learning about the earthquake, this new safety standards were progressive in 1906 without much scientific studies of earthquakes. While no city can be entirely earthquake-proof, these measures helped reduce the vulnerability of San Francisco's buildings and infrastructure to seismic hazards.
