A survey of 3,000 teenagers in 2005 found that 0.80 believed in God, and 0.18 did not attend religious services. Is this evidence that some sampled teenagers attended religious services in spite of not believing in God, or that some sampled teenagers did not attend religious services in spite of believing in God, or neither? Tell which of these four statistics students provides the best answer. Adam: There's not enough information to answer the question. Brittany: The problem is that we know what's true for the sample but we can't say what's true for the population. Carlos: We're only asked to say what's true for the sample. 18% didn't attend services, so that means 82% did. And only 80% believed in God, so 2% attended services even though they didn't believe in God. Dominique: I agree that the evidence shows some sampled teenagers attended services in spite of not believing in God, but it may be even more than 2%, if there were also some teenagers who didn't attend services, even though they did believe in God.
