Consider a sample of water from a stream found to have an initial DO of 8.0 mg/L. It is placed directly into a BOD bottle and incubated for 5 days at 20°C. After 5 days, the DO is found to be 0 mg/L. A new technician stated that the BOD5 for this sample is 8.0 mg/L - 0 mg/L = 8.0 mg/L. You realize right away that this technician has lacks the critical assessment that you were taught at UMGC. Please explain in a few sentences to this technician the basis of the equation he used and why it cannot be used in this situation.
