Question: Unfortunately, the history of African Americans is a story of standing up and fighting against racism and very serious unfair treatment. In 1865, the 13th Amendment, Abolition of Slavery, was passed by congress, which states, "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction" (National Archives, 2022). Even after the law prohibited slavery, African Americans still had to suffer discrimination, such as the Jim Crow laws that enforced racial segregation for years. They weren't being treated equally, separated from white people, and didn't have the same job and education opportunities. It was until the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that prohibited discrimination based of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin (DOL, n.d.).
