Handwashing prior to changing a nappy:
- Wet hands with running water at a designated hand-washing sink
- Apply soap to hands and lather
- rubbing under fingernails, over palms, front and back of hand, between fingers and up to wrist line for 15 seconds
- Rinse hands under running water for 10-15 seconds
- Turn tap off with paper towel, unless there is a sensor tap and discard into hands-free bin
- Dry hands effectively with new paper towel or hand dryer.
- Discard paper towel in the hands-free bin without using hands and re-contaminating. Preparing the nappy changing area using appropriate hygiene practices:
- Prepare nappy change area by gathering child's nappy, wet wipes, change of clothes, change mat, plastic bag, and paper towel in readiness.
- Place paper towel down on change mat.
- Place gloves on both hands. Change the child's nappy ensuring hygiene practices are followed:
- Gather the child in a sensitive manner and share with the child what is happening next.
- Lift small babies onto change table or if an older heavier child, use steps or other service approved equipment to help child safely reach change tabletop.
