Excercise 1:
Routine Request-Membership Information: Although your part-time job is only temporary while you finish collage, your boss wants you to gain more experience in public speaking and has suggested that you join Toastmasters International, an organization devoted to helping its members practice and improve their public-speaking skills. You are interested in determining whether your town has a local chapter and, if so, the time and place of meetings, the amount of annual dues, and the like.
Locate the Toastmasters International homepage on the Internet and find an e-mail address. Compose an e-mail message, asking several specific pertinent questions. E-mail a copy of your message to your instructor. Follow your instructor's direction regarding whether to mail your message to Toastmasters.
Exercise 2:
Routine Claim - Pump Order Mix-Up: Assume the role of Uriah Castleton, purchasing agent for Western Electric in Gilbert, Arizona. You recently placed an order (purchase order No. 44-0987) for 12 Model 2500 air conditioning pumps (Part No. 2500-89712) from ACE Supply Inc. in Phoenix.
When the pumps arrived, you noticed you had received more than 12 pumps, and they were not Model 2500. ACE had accidentally sent 25 Model 1200 pumps. Although you could sell the model 1200 pumps, you already have plenty of them in stock. What you really need is the Model 2500 pumps.
Write a letter to Brent Sewell, the shipping manager at ACE Supply Inc., requesting that they ship the 12 model 2500 pumps quickly because you have only three more left in stock. Also ask what his plans are for your returning the 25 model 1200 pumps. Enclose a copy of your purchase order. The address for ACE supply is P.O. Box 2238, Phoenix, AZ 85012.
