Rough Draft What is "Real" Country Music? "Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent," Victor Hugo once said. For a lot of society, music is the basis of expression; it gives life to the world and reveals our soul. It makes you wonder what your music taste reveals. Today, in an attempt to distinguish the voices of music, society has come up with what we call genres that characterize our sound by similarities in content, style, structure, sound, and expression. Each genre with their own classification and uniqueness, some more wide than others, and some more identible than others. This makes it difficult to understand what the guidelines are for each genre or simply what makes a song part of that genre. Some think a genre is based on the instruments played, accent of the singer, or the look of the performance. However, when you look closer at an individual genre you begin to realize there is more to what makes up the genre than just its appearance. Particularly, country music is often seen as one of the simplest styles that's all about cowboy hats, banjos, and southern accents but if you were to really understand the genre it becomes clear it is the story and history that makes a song country. The narrative within a country song is often inspiring which causes certain passions and feelings to arise making it easy to relate to such experiences.
