CEE 4554 Natural Disasters - Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University

Over the last three lecture (lectures of March 8, March 10, and March 15) Prof. Ritchie discussed the sociological aspects of disasters and Prof. Zobel discussed the concept of resilience. These lectures served to provide you (engineers) with a different perspective of natural disasters. Rather than just thinking "what will be the damage caused by the disaster? Or "what can we do to minimize damage?", I wanted you to think "what is the true impact of disaster on society?" and "how can we develop measures that consider societal response?"

For this assignment, I want you to write a 500 to 1,000-word essay where you consider one problem raised in either of the three lectures, and then expand on what are the roles of engineers in addressing this problem.

To obtain a full grade, you must:

- Clearly identify and fully describe the problem you are addressing
- Describe how current engineering practices addresses (or fails to address) this problem
- Postulate how engineering practice must adapt to address this problem. This can be a solution proposed by others or proposed by yourself
- You must demonstrate critical thinking to obtain full credit for the assignment

I can''t attach the lecture videos but I got the transcript of all three lectures and two lectures are from the same professor. When I put it all in a pdf, it turned out to be around 50 pages which is obviously because each video is 1 hr 15 minutes. It''s a lot of reading and reflecting as an engineer. Needs around 1000 words which should reflect critical thinking. Please use technical terms, and reflect critical thinking. Attaching the assignment and the lecture pdf. Please type in word and use IEEE citation while using external resources
