Assignment:

Throughout recent history, the United States has had various approaches to its foreign policy (e.g., neutrality, isolationism, liberal internationalism, containment, neoconservatism, neo-isolationism, selective engagement). In a global environment, US foreign policy has evolved to align to a 21st century world. This evolution and expansion have brought forth a debate surrounding the appropriate role of the United States on the world stage, especially when there remain unresolved domestic needs in America.

For this Reflection Journal, consider the current United States foreign policy approach. Reflect upon the balance between the United States' international role and its responsibility to American citizens.

Consider the following questions:

  • What do you believe is the role of the United States in a global environment?
  • What do you believe is the role of the United States to the people of the United States?
  • Considering how you see the United States in a global environment, what foreign policy approach should the United States utilize in today's world?
  • Realistically, how can the United States balance its international role and its responsibility to American citizens?
