Mythology is often described as the earliest form of science, ascribing as it did the origin of the universe and man as well as natural phenomena such as storms and earthquakes to supernatural beings. Greek philosophers from the pre-Socratics to Aristotle were the first to attempt to explain reality and the workings of the universe in purely natural not supernatural terms. For them mind or reason were the key to unlock the mysteries of the universe.

Discuss the meaning and role of reason or mind in the pre-Socratics, Plato and Aristotle. Your discussion should focus on the last two including Plato's analogy of the cave and divided line from The Republic, while addressing the importance and role of the pre-Socratics.
