The role of juvenile officers, the rights of juvenile offenders, and policing strategies all continue to change over time, but remain important in preventing and controlling delinquency. Several members of a working-class community have recently complained of teenagers loitering, playing loud music, and drinking alcohol out on the street and in various parking lots. The local police have been engaging in saturation patrol, targeting the areas where citizens have complained of antisocial and delinquent behavior. During one such incident, the police have come upon a group of juveniles congregating and drinking alcohol in a convenience store parking lot. After some of them show identification that shows them to be under the legal drinking age, and several others are noncompliant and argumentative, the police decide to search the teens and take them into custody.
