This is the eighth Management Strategy Capstone Project installment as outlined in Module 0 located in the Learning Modules section.

Based on the strategies for acquiring and developing employees, methods available for motivating employees, types and theories of diversity, and advantages and challenges of workplace diversity.

In order to gain insight into the management strategy related to human resource management, you will assume a management role at Whirlpool. View their website including their Our Company section. You will also view an additional video in the directions for the first and third requirements.

1. Explore strategies for acquiring and developing employees by addressing the following:

a. Assume that Whirlpool will need to hire a new leader for its washing machine division. Describe what would occur for each of the following steps:

  1. Anticipate employee needs
  2. Specify the job
  3. Develop the pool
  4. Assess the candidates
  5. Close the deal
  6. Integrate the newcomer

b. As part of its employee development program, Whirlpool provides opportunities for growth in several areas. Review this segment: Manufacturing Leadership Development Program (Time: 2:01, cc available) and address the following:

  1. Discuss how training, plant rotation, and challenging assignments contribute towards Julia's development as a Whirlpool employee.
  2. Describe the role of an individual development plan in the growth of Julia's career.
  3. Although Julia is a relatively new hire, describe how Whirlpool could consider her future roles as part of their succession planning activities.

3. Discuss methods available for motivating employees by addressing the following:

a. Assume that Whirlpool utilizes a "Pay-For-Performance Compensation Program" for its employees and address the following:

  1. Discuss the role of HR management in establishing this program.
  2. Explain the purpose of a merit matrix and how it is utilized in connection with this program.
  3. Discuss how this program would motivate employees and provide an example of a type of reward that could be made available for successful performance.

b. Assume that Whirlpool utilizes a "Total Rewards Strategy" for its employees and address the following:

  1. Discuss the role of HR management in establishing this program.
  2. Discuss how this program would motivate employees and provide an example of a type of reward that could be made available for successful performance.
  3. Discuss how the "Work-Life Effectiveness" and "Recognition" elements of this program would motivate employees if there was no related monetary reward attached to these elements.
