Assignment:

A grocery store (that sells just fresh fruit and vegetables) is wanting to introduce a modern computerised system at the payment registers where the staff process the items in the customers' trolleys. There are usually between 3 and 6 registers open most of the time.

Currently they just have a basic cash register that operates like a calculator: the staff enters the "price per kilogram" of an item and then places the item (e.g. apples) onto the scales to weigh them. This requires the staff to look at a printed sheet showing the "price per kilogram" of all the various food items. It calculates the total cost, and then the customer pays with either cash or card.

There are several systems that could be obtained by the grocery store that operate in different ways and offer various features.

One system offers the ability to take photographs of the item being purchased so that it can detect the type of fruit or vegetable automatically. But it takes a few seconds between the time that the photo is taken, until the candidate/likely matches are determined and displayed on the screen. The user needs to still select the correct item from the screen.

All systems provide the ability to look up by typing the name of the fruit/vegetable. Some also offer example images (for example, as you type 'ca' it will show 'carrots' and 'cabbages' images for selection).

From the store manager's perspective, the way in which to update prices is important. Some systems provide a manager's computer where the manager can edit prices in a list and all the devices at the cash registers will be updated straight away. Others require you to access each individual device to separately update the price for the items that have changed.

In your role of Business Analyst, the grocery store has asked if you could help them choose the appropriate replacement system.

a) Generate 3 evaluation criteria which could be used by your analysis team to help you in choosing between the different potential candidate solutions.

For each criterion that you generate, explain in detail the way that you will obtain a measurement for it - i.e. what will you consider, what will you examine, how will you get the result rank?

b) You will eventually need to combine the measurements you obtain for each of the criteria, regarding each candidate solution. Explain how you plan to combine the measurements to make the final decision of which solution to recommend.
