Case Study #1: Client- Marie
Susan is an addiction counselor at Your City Behavioral Health Center (YCBHC). A client, Marie, a 30-year-old Hispanic female, approaches Susan in the parking lot and asks if she can speak to Susan about concerns with a situation. Susan agrees to speak with Marie regarding her concern. Marie informs Susan that Sara, a client of the YCBHC and who is also a friend of hers, is dating a counselor who is employed with YCBHC. Marie informed Susan that she thinks it is wrong that her friend, Sara is dating the employee. Marie shared with Susan that she has spoken to Sara about her feelings about this situation and encouraged her to stop seeing the employee because he could "get in trouble" and cause problems for Sara. Marie has requested that the conversation is kept confidential. Marie also informs you that she will terminate her services if this information is reported.
Case Study #2: Client- Jackson
Jackson is a 35-year-old African-American male with an alcohol use disorder. Jackson attends group facilitator, Bob group counseling sessions weekly. In one of the group sessions, Jackson discusses his challenges with family support regarding his sobriety. Jackson shared that his family has "cut him off." In addition, Jackson shared that his AA sponsor recently stopped taking his calls. Jackson feels he has no one to talk to when he starts to have cravings and urges to drink when he becomes stressed. After the group session ended, Bob had a conversation with Jackson, and Bob said he will contact his sponsor regarding the non-communication with Jackson. Out of concern for Jackson's treatment progress, Bob informs Jackson that he will temporarily serve as a mentor for Jackson so that he can have continued support. Bob also began individual addiction counseling with Jackson. Jackson had become very comfortable working with Bob and considers him a friend, based on the interactions they have outside of the group sessions and the individual counseling sessions. Bob had the opportunity to speak with Jackson's previous sponsor, he disclosed that Jackson is gay, and has demonstrated inappropriate sexual behaviors towards him and does not feel comfortable continuing to serve as Jackson's sponsor. Jackson has not demonstrated any inappropriate sexual behaviors towards Bob. However, Bob has reached the point that a conversation with Jackson is needed to discuss treatment alternatives. In Bob's discussion, he encouraged Jackson to continue attending group counseling sessions, but Bob will no longer serve as his mentor and will refer Jackson to another addiction counselor. After Bob had the discussion with Jackson, Bob noticed Jackson stopped attending group counseling sessions. His new addiction counselor has informed Bob that Jackson has canceled his first session.
- For each case study, take on the role of a supervisor AND the role of a colleague providing consultation to counselors, Susan and Bob. Explain how you would help support them in these difficult situations.
