Rates of children being overweight as been on the rise since the 1970s. It has became an epidemic, and that causes for prevention strategies. The peer review article I read was called "Preventing childhood obesity: what works". The major topics that were focused on were parents, aspects of the feeding environment and how it relates to childhood obesity. They came to the conclusion that as omnivores, children will learn to eat whatever is available in their enviornments. And, from that they will learn to like or reject foods which provides needed flexibility. As we know, children are very dependent so this findings seemed very accurate. For example, when the kid's feeding environment is restrictive, or when they are offered the wrong kinds of foods, they develop preferences and eating styles that could increase their risk of obesity. Parent practices used shapes a child's early experiences with food and eating. The feeding practices mentioned in the article were, "when, how frequently, how much children are fed and the social contexts within which feedings occur". The practices parents pass down to their children were inherited by their parents and so forth, so improving eating practices in the home for both parents and children would play a vital role in decreasing rate of childhood obesity.
