Creation of Tortilla Chips Super Bowl parties everywhere owe a debt to Rebecca Webb Carranza. Most people don't even know her name. This Mexican-born entrepreneur invented the tortilla chip in 1948. At the time, Carranza and her husband ran the El Zarape Tortilla Factory in Los Angeles. Some tortillas always came off the conveyor belt in strange shapes. Carranza threw them away. She hated this waste of food. One day before a family party, she cut some discarded tortillas into triangles and fried them. The relatives loved the chips. They could easily grab a handful or dip the crunchy chips in sauce. Carranza began selling her chips for 10 cents a bag in her Mexican delicatessen and factory. By the 1960s, she had named them Tort Chips. Her factory now manufactured nothing but this irresistible snack. Demand for the chips took off. Carranza is now recognized as a snack-food industry pioneer. She received awards for her work, including, appropriately, two Golden Tortillas.
