You are the new General Manager for human resources at FNB Investment Bank, the largest investment Bank in Jamaica.
After reviewing staffing information you recognize that the composition of the management team is mostly males (85%) with no females at the highest management rank. The company however employs a high percentage of women who are well represented in the lower paying jobs or the lower supervisory level, some of whom have similar qualifications to some members of the management team. The situation is somewhat troubling and you decide to discuss it with another senior manager. His comments are simply "Ignore it, as long as the company is doing well and we can get our bonuses then why bother yourself."
Based on the comment you get the feeling that this sums up the feelings of the other managers. As you contemplate your next move, it has been brought to your attention that Caiva a long serving excellent supervisor has tendered her resignation.
In speaking with her, she informs you that the main reason for leaving is that she has gotten a better job offer, at the management level with FNB's major competitor. She also hints to you that several other good female staffers are contemplating similar action as they are not satisfied with their roles and the opportunities for mobility and growth.
After mentioning the situation to other senior managers, you are now convinced that the situation is generally known and accepted. As the person responsible for HR you believe that the organization with its current staffing make up is not utilizing its human resources effectively. You also recognize that it could be to your own detriment if you go against the current sentiments.
As you ponder your next move, your secretary hands you another resignation letter, and also indicates that a representative from the Bureau of Women's Affairs is on the line.
